Dating scam from Kazan, Russia - Part 1

I would like to warn fellow males from a scam artist, located in Russia.

I had a profile posted on an American dating web site and a female from my area answered me. Her letter was a few lines long, in good English and she seemed honest and cute, so I replied.

The letter said she had a read-only trial account and would not be able to receive messages, so she included a yahoo email address. She asked me to write to this yahoo email address. I did this and a few days later her trial account was gone, she explained that she deleted it because she found me. (that is what she answered, when I asked her about it)

This girl claimed to live in Kazan, Tartastan, 26 years old and called herself Barbi.
There was something suspicious about her letters, in particular I always had the
impression that she did not really read mine every time. Sometimes she wrote
personal, matching replies, then sometimes not. her photos of which she sent
about 25 so far, had number like 5.jpg, 6.jpg, 35.jpg etc.

Yesterday I did a query for some phrases of some of her emails and found them
posted on 2 other web sites. Apparently she wrote identical letters to other guys
using different names and different pictures. She or he asked those guys for money,
supposedly for tickets or visa paperwork. I guess I am lucky that she never asked
me for any money. However, I felt fooled when I saw "my" emails had also been
sent in parts to other guys.

For that reason I will post her here letters. I know that parts of these letters
have been posted on 2 other sites, but not all.
I include the full headers in the first email. The sender comes from a russian
dial-up but in another email I sent her a URL to one of my web sites and apparantly
"she" uses some sort of satellite DSL for the downstream, the IP number was
84.xx (to be filled in later).

Hi Peter! Have good day! Peter, you ask, where I live - to To regret

To learn each other. I for the first time have acquaintance through
the Internet. It was very difficult to me to place my structure in a
service of acquaintances, because I am in Russia, the service of
acquaintances does not accept the members from this country. I had to
specify in a profile, that I am in USA. In this letter I shall inform
you a little information myself and if the dialogue with me will be
interesting to you, I shall tell about myself in more detail in the
following letters. I live in an average part of Russia, in city Kazan
in Tatarstan republic. But if we shall decide to meet, I hope, that it
not Will be a problem for us because I have made a little Travel to
other countries. I was in the several countries of Europe; For example
Turkey, Italy, Germany. I made these travel as The tourist. Therefore
Peter, you should not have excitement be relative That we not beside.
I such woman, that if I shall like The person for a meeting I shall
reach even on the moon. Besides in Our days is not a problem to make

Letter 4:

HI Peter! I am pleased to receive your reciprocal message. For me it
was pleasant to receive the letter from you today. I am very glad that
you have written to me. Thank for your picture, it me to like. I shall
be To increase and to unpack it. I liked absolutely all your pictures.
That picture with the clown really amusing! What small little mouse!
You have made absolutely correctly, that have not listened to the
neighbour and have let off that little mouse. Peter You e-mail means
for me, that I too was interesting to you. You Really Peter, see a
picture of me nice? Peter, at me is present to you It is a lot of
questions and I would like to ask them in the messages, I hope you
Will allow to me answers to them - OK? You for me the nice person, And
on this for me it is important to know your opinion on some things. Me
to not irritate, that you to be more senior than me. I to search for
the mature man, which would be to wise and scientific life. I like the
men which is more senior than me and can learn me to something in this
short life. I to want to connect destiny with the man of such age as
you. I think, that you read my structure and could see there, that I
haves serious intentions to get acquainted with the good person for
relations . I shall try to tell a little about my character. I do not
know as it to start, I think, that I very romantic person. I like to
communicate with people, it is pleasant to me Good humour. I very much
appreciate such qualities in people, as fidelity and honesty. I
believe in love, and I think it very valuable thing which needs to be
protected. I very much The jealous person. I adore, when to me pay
compliments and is ready to listen to them indefinitely. For me it is
necessary, that around of me there was a cleanliness and the order, I
frequently am engaged cleaning. Also to me to like to prepare for a
meal, various tasty things. It is pleasant to me romantic relations
between the man and The woman, but probably all women dream to get
acquainted with good The person to have with him beautiful romantic
relations. But frequently such things come to an end Very quickly. I
have no intention to spend myself on such acquaintances. While I have
not met In the life of such person to which I would decide to give
myself and the life. But me it would be desirable to find such person.
I think, that for the woman the main thing to have in a life not
Career or other success, and strong family and the favourite person
beside what to care of him. Tell please, you dream to meet what woman
in the life? Excuse Peter, that I ask you to discuss such frank thing
with The person whom you know couple of days. But it is interesting to
me to know It about you. I shall wait for yours e-mail. Yours

Letter 5:

Hi , I was sad that you do not write me and do not answer on my
letters. There can be I you than that has offended or you simply play
with me in games? I wait from you of the answer. Yours Barbi.

At that point I had started to ignore her because her letters were ridiculous, not reflecting what I had written. However, things picked up then again..

I'm not sure yet what is going on. I've decided to wait and find out. I'm no sucker, but I'm not yet convinced that they are predators. First of all, it is 'they'. I'm rather convinced of that because Redra opened communication with me on Saturday, and Tatyana (the same one as above) on Monday. I knew immediately they were Russian, and because I had two sending me the same form letters at once I knew they were form letters (I suspected as much before I even got my confirming email due to the suspicious structure and that she didn't answer questions). I've found Tatyana and Redra to be on different schedules and have very different writing styles. If they were the same person she/he'd not be emailing me still from both personas giving away the form letters. Note that I've found Tatyana to provide minimalist information outside of the artificial and suspect information in the form letter. Redra modifies the form to suite her writing style and is regularly inserting sentences of her own to at least address some of my subjects/questions notably more so than Tatyana.

So, right now I believe that they are different people using the same system. I suspect that a dating (or perhaps scam) service of some sort with Russian origin is providing the form letters to help them begin communications. It could be innocent in the form of a 'how to' beginner's guide to international dating, or it could be an organized scam institution. Even if some people have been scammed by someone using the forms, it doesn't mean that was their purpose. It could be a 'few rotten apples' situation. There is, of course, cause for concern. But that goes for anyone you may meet. It's just that getting suckered out of paying for dinner is a bit different that being suckered out of an airline ticket.

I'm currently only up to letters 4 (Tatyana) and 6 (Redra) according to this email chain's numbering, but am very curious as to where this will go. They could very well be real people with honest sentiment and aspirations who are simply using a form letter communication crutch. My first thought on the form letters was that they were amazingly poorly written (I disagree severely with Peter's statement of 'good English') until it occurred to me that they were meant for people with weak English skills. If the form was well written then the alterations the 'client' made to the form would stand out and therefore reduce the effectiveness of the form. Another observation is that the forms so far seem to be rather basic. If you were to start an intercontinental dating relationship, there would be an obvious progression of things basically every women would want to ask, and of questions and concerns men would have for them. The form letters seem to address those basics and as you progress in communication, the forms appear to be consuming a smaller percentage of the email, though it is too early to tell for sure how long the forms last. Email number 6 is still about 70% form letter. I have also noticed (this is where this web site was a great service) that Tatyana is using the forms as provided, while Redra is actually improving the English within the form. Perhaps about 30-40% of the forms have had sentence structure enhancements made by Redra. At first (still a possibility) I thought perhaps the form provider simply provided upgrades, but the fact that Tatyana is still using the original forms suggests that Redra truly is altering them on her own. One may also question (as I have) why someone would use form letters in the first place. If you have dated online, you have likely noticed that it can be a little bit intimidating to simply start talking to someone via email and not ask the right questions (or ask them at the wrong time) or move too fast or move too slowly. Add to that complexity and intimidation that you are talking in a second language to someone living in a different society with a little different social mores, and the desire for leveraging someone else's work in establishing a step by step process becomes rather plausible.

As for Peter, it sounds like Barbi has invested a fair amount of time in this. Most scams appear to surface rather quickly (2-6 emails) from what I've read so far. I haven't read most of these letters, though at the end I noticed she is planning on flying over. This is your litmus test. If she pays her own way without a financial emergency of some sort you're golden. If something pops up and she needs money: then it's a scam with a long investment. Keep us posted as to the outcome, please. My instinct is that she is for real, though perhaps I'm just gullible.
The following links are likely of particular interest to anyone who found and took the time to read this page.

Be forewarned. The 'Alphabetical Archive of Reported Scammers' list requires a high speed internet connection. I searched it already for Redra (no hits) and Tatyana (TONs of hits on that name, but not the one I'm talking to).

It is true that she (? Barbi?) invested a lot of time writing me 25 letters so far, however, the most recent one was 90% form letter again, I found an identical version somewhere else.

Even if she had honest intentions, someone else had received the same photos from a girl using a different name. I believed her for quite a while, but at this point, sorry, I do not think so.

I've swayed in the direction of fraud. In part due to Peter's post above, and also because yesterday I played two different lines with each of them. To Redra I sent a photo of me holding a printed photo of her ('the closest we can be for now') and asked her to do the same with a specific photo of mine that I had sent earlier. She skipped a day and hasn't emailed me yet. It will be interesting to see if that is her last message. If she comes through it would prove that the author at least kept the photos and that the author either IS the girl in the photos or has access to the girl in the photos. Or is good with a photo editor, though I'm good with them too and should be able to detect that.

With Tatyana I took a different tack. I told her that I knew she was using form letters and although I could understand why she would use them, politely said that it must come to an end now. I have been tracking non-form based information versus form based information by highlighting the text in the emails and so I went back and quickly listed everything she told me outside of the standard form. Which wasn't much. I then told her that since 'honesty and openness' were what she was looking for in a man, that she would understand if I demanded the same from her. I'd be very glad to tell her all about myself, but only after she told me 1) how she came to contact me, 2) where she got the form letters from, and 3) why she chose to use them. I then told her that for clarity, she should NOT send the 'Good day' message and then copied and pasted the next form letter in the chain into the bottom of my email. I populated the form letter with my name and Tatyanas so that it would be exactly as she would have sent it to me (less the 0-10% modifications she would have made).

The response I just got from Tatyana was not one that I was expecting. She sent the 'Hi, my dear' message as follows:
HI dear Aaron !

Aaron, today I have very intense day on my work. I found a little time
what to send you this news and and to inform, that I miss, when I wait
yours e-mail. I shall write to you later Aaron. Yours Cat-woman.

P.S.Aaron, and you have desire more likely to reach to a computer, to
read mine e-mail ?

The implication is that she never got my message. Funny that an email delivery problem would crop up just then. Alternatively it could mean that she got the email but didn't have time to respond to it. Either way, I recognised the email from this website and so knew it was another one of the form letters. I didn't think to place that one in the bottom of my email as well and say don't send it either. :)

I'll keep you posted as to what happens. Also, early on I tried using a web bug with Tatyana to see if I could get a read receipt. It wasn't triggered. That would have given me IP, geographical location, and internet service provider information for the machine used to read the email. It could be that the client they use doesn't support HTML or else it could also imply some sort of automated system in the works.

FYI, Tatyana emails from:
Received: from [] (helo=[])
Received: from ( [])

Received: from [] (helo=[])
Received: from ( [])

What is particularly odd, is that over the 6 emails I've gotten from her, they have consistently alternated between the two originating IP addresses.

Redra sends from:
Received: from ([]:2041 'EHLO localhost'
Received: from ( [])

Received: from ([]:53240 'EHLO localhost'
Received: from ( [])

It seemed odd that the originating IP was the same for the two of them ( I went to and traced it. The IP is from St. Augustin, Germany.

The Yandex mailer ( is, of course, from Moscow.

The secondary IP address used by Tatyana ( gave the tracer fits. It couldn't get past a dialup provider based out of Russia. I'm guessing because that particular IP wasn't active at the time within that ISP. Or else they are filtering. The provider is 'VolgaTelecom Mari El branch'. The same provider owns ( as reported by anonymous just above. Peter's report of ( should also be from the same provider (the first two IP positions are the most significant).

Additionally, I also noticed while ripping through email headers just now that Redra is using 'The Bat! (v3.60.07) Professional' email client. Researching the company you find that they provide English, German, and Russian language versions and that their company is based out of the Republic of Moldova (located between Romainia and the Ukraine in the former USSR).

I also ran a traceroute on []) which came up with a 'Hosting provider' within Russia as expected.

I'm running out of ideas for the moment. Of particular note from the above research is that the scammers appear to be operating out of Germany mostly using russian dialup providers, but not always via dialup. Contact information for 'Technopark der GMD' which hosts the German IP address is:
Technopark der GMD
Rathausallee 10
D-53757 St. Augustin

I was eventually able to locate the following information on the Technopark der GMD. What follows is the Google translation of the German web page (computer translated):

Our next attendance was with the GMD research center information technology GmbH. When we saw the GMD building, we were pleased much - it and so modern were so beautifully. Dr. Schunk welcomed us cordially. The Technopark of the GMD has a good situation in the proximity of Bonn. Here the development of the future is promoted from Bonn and Cologne. As national research center for information technology the GMD for the economy and the science is very important. In research and development projects the GMD co-operates closely with partner. It was created 1968 and has most modern buildings and laboratories, library and a modern communication infrastructure for the order. Such an infrastructure is a good basis for of Germany technology. With so a center it does not surprise me any longer that Germany admits in such a way for its technologies is!

Huh. I finished this posting twice already. If I keep this up I'll come up with the perps names.......

At this point I'd like to wait a day or two for Tatyana and Redra responses. Then I'll have to decide if I want to contact, the Technopark, both, or some authority. Simply contacting to have the two profiles I'm familiar with wouldn't gain anything. The question would be if they would actually persue them based on IPs and such since they obviously have more than just the two I'm familiar with and because they could simply create new profiles. I'd rather one way or another the men/women be identified so as they can be at least fired from their current supposed jobs at the Technopark. I'm tempted to send the three photos I have (Redra, Tatyana, and Bambi) to the Technopark to see if they recognise them. I'm guessing they won't though. If I DO get my Redra photo back, I may just do that, though. :) I'll just have to find someone there that can read English..... Or go through and/or the authorities. Oh well. Give it a couple days.

The Technopark IP in Germany is their ISP downstream - satellite DSL. Downstream for web browsing via satellite, upstream (sending of email, making an http request) via dial-up. They had a similar in the USA at least on the East Coast during the late nineties for cable modem (downstream via cable, upstream via dial-up).

I had sent 'barbi' a unique link to my web site and monitored what IP would hit this URL.. that is how I got the 84.* IP.

Still any doubts even though your lady and my lady use the same ISP? The ISP's site is:
I figured that out because the 84.* number resolves as

However, it would be possible to identify the user of this internet connection by knowing the dial-up account's IP number for a given time. The ISP could theoretically look who has this IP number. Barbi had the same dialup IP for several weeks.

Yeah, recently I have received the exact same emails from Barbi as Peter has posted. I have only written to her for a week now, and she's ready to meet a stranger half way across the world just like that. Go figure. I don't think ANY woman would just jump on a plane and go to a distant land after writing to someone for a week.
P.S. I found this site by putting her email address in my search bar and doing a search on that address.

i just met a friend who travel the world, he says some of the girl don't know much about comptuer so they use a form email to mail out at whatever agency allow them to. So i'm not sure...

But this ip address i just found out is a Linux box that's why we got many users email from it.

Tatyana and Redra don't seem to like me anymore. Mostly because my emails to them have lacked any vigor of late, even the pretend form they have had in the past. I have now notified of the two contacts I have and provided what I know about them. I'm not guessing they'll do more than remove the two profiles I've given them and say 'thanks'. But you never know. An ACTUAL woman I've talked to from mentioned that every man she has ever talked to from there has complained about the Russian form letters. So apparently it's a little rampant. I doubt I've provided any significant new information to them. I'll let you know their response when I get one. On the plus side, I've done a lot of research about Russia, it's society, and the drive behind the 'Russian bride' phenomenon. It's been very educational and entertaining. Oddly enough, I consider it to have been a good experience. :) And, should I ever decide to actually SEEK in international relationship on the other side of the world, I'll be well prepared. lol For now, I prefer to be bitched out by someone nearby.

I too got that initial contact from, and yeah, I too learnt a lot about this whole phenomenon. I even started to learn Russian, which I will continue, better use of the long commute time than talk radio.

I am chatting to a Kazan girl - and have paid about $200 for passport and visa. She not only e mails but chats everyday after work at internet cafe - usung MSN. She chats for hours, so already I have had my moneys worth .We are arranging a holiday, and will let you know how it goes.
I think that the fraudster girls who ask for money are easy to sort out. When they ask for money for passport etc, tell them your brother is Chief of Police and he will help - that usually sorts them out pronto.
Final teast is to say you are very rich and if they don't use the money for the right reason - second payment will be to local mafia agent for wheelchair..
So, far about 20% of the ones I have discovered are in the fraudster bracket .
C ya.

Also, on occasions, have asked for full name and address in order to send present / postcard/ something interesting etc. Thats helpfull to do research.
Finally, if you do get a correct address, suggest that you may be able to make a personal vusut for acouple of days / a week, because of whatever reason.
Went out with a Ukraine girl after having chatted for about 4 years. She sugested we meet up in Kiev, and we did have a great time. But the reason for keping me away from her home town was that during those four years she had had a baby and did not want me to find out.......but once a girl had a baby, certain body parts change !! Cannot hide that evidence.
